How a cabinet job goes
Clean
Kitchen cabinets carry grease you can't see, and paint won't bond to it, so everything gets degreased first.
Sand and prime
The old finish gets scuffed so the primer grips, and the primer seals the wood so stains and knots don't bleed through.
Protect the room
Counters, floors, appliances and walls get covered, because spray travels.
Spray
Thin, even coats go on with the sprayer, which is what leaves the finish smooth.
Put it back together
Doors, drawers and hardware go back on once the finish is ready to handle.
Why spray instead of brush
A brush leaves marks and a roller leaves texture, and both show up on a cabinet door under kitchen lights. A sprayer lays the paint down evenly, reaches into the corners of shaker panels and molding, and dries without ridges.

Choosing a cabinet color and sheen
Satin and semi-gloss are the usual picks for cabinets, because they wipe clean where flat paint would hold onto every mark. Light colors make a small kitchen feel bigger, and darker lower cabinets hide the scuffs near the floor.
Look at your samples under your own kitchen lights, at night and in the morning, before you decide.

Questions about cabinet painting and custom finishes
Is painting cabinets cheaper than replacing them?
Usually, when the boxes are solid and you like the layout. Painting changes the color and the finish without tearing out the kitchen.
Will painted cabinets chip?
Any painted surface can chip under a hard hit. What keeps cabinet paint from peeling is the prep underneath it: degreasing, sanding and priming.
Can my trim match my cabinets?
Yes. Trim and cabinets can be finished in the same color and sheen, or in a contrast.
What counts as a decorative finish?
Anything past a solid color. Describe the look in the estimate form and we'll tell you whether it's something we do.
Can wood be stained a different color?
Stain can take wood darker. Going lighter usually means sanding or stripping the old finish down to bare wood first, and that's part of the price.
