How a job goes
Five steps, the same on a single room, a whole house or a garage floor. The only thing that changes is how much prep the surface needs.

Prep
Floors and furniture get covered, and every surface gets patched, sanded, caulked or ground, depending on the job.
Paint or coat
The finish goes on over a surface that's ready for it.
Walk through it
We walk the job with you and touch up anything you point out before we call it done.
What the prep looks like
Prep is the part of the job you won't see when it's done, and it's the part that decides how long the finish lasts.
Walls and ceilings
Holes and cracks get filled and sanded flat, and stains get primed so they don't bleed through. Floors and furniture get covered first.
Trim and cabinets
Everything gets cleaned and sanded so the new finish bonds, and gaps along the trim get caulked. Then it gets spray finished.
Outside
Loose paint gets scraped, rough spots get sanded, bare wood gets primed and open gaps get caulked before the first coat.
Garage floors
Grinding opens up the concrete so the coating bonds to it instead of sitting on top. Skip it and the coating can lift where hot tires park.
What goes into a painting quote
Every quote comes down to the same few things:
- How big the space is, and how many rooms, walls or floors are in it
- How much patching, scraping or grinding the surface needs
- Color changes, since going from dark to light takes more coats
- Ceilings, trim, doors and cabinets on top of the walls
- Access: stairwells, high ceilings and tall peaks
- The paint line, the sheen and the finish you pick
When to paint in Michigan
Interior painting works any time of year. Outside, paint needs a dry surface and temperatures above the minimum on the can while it cures, so most exterior work happens between late spring and early fall. Garage floor coatings depend on temperature too, and a cold slab slows the cure.
If you want the outside of the house done before summer, ask early. A rainy week pushes exterior days, and that's better than painting a wet wall.

Questions to ask a painter before you hire one
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes, licensed and insured. Proof available upon request.
Will you fix cracks and peeling paint first?
Yes. That's the prep. Paint over a crack or a peeling spot and it comes back through, and then you're paying for the job twice.
What paint do you use?
Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams. If you've already picked a color, send us the name or the number.
Can you spray finish trim and cabinets?
Yes. Spraying leaves no brush marks, and we spray with Graco sprayers.
How long does a job take?
It depends on the size of the job, how much prep it needs and, outside, the weather. You'll get the timeline with the price, before anything starts.
Do I need to be home?
Someone needs to let us in for interior work. For outside work, we just need to be able to reach every side of the house.
What if I don't know what color I want?
Pick a few chips and try samples on the wall, in the light the room actually gets. A color looks different at night and on a north-facing wall.
What's the difference between interior and exterior paint?
Exterior paint is made to flex through temperature swings and hold up to sun and moisture. Interior paint is made to wipe clean and look even indoors. They aren't interchangeable.
Do you work on new construction?
Yes. We've painted new custom homes, from the first coat to the final touch-ups.
Can I see your work?
Yes. Our Instagram has the jobs from start to finish: epoxy garage floors from bare concrete to the final coat, spray finishing, custom homes and stained staircases.
